This one is the only AC/DC concert I'll never ever forget until I die!
I grew up in East Germany and became AC/DC fan early 1978 when I first listened to T.N.T. on a West Berlin radio station. I started collecting AC/DC tracks by taping them from radio or copying them from friends (by that time still in mono!). When I did hear of Bon's death I even wore a black shirt for a week or two. I was the first AC/DC fan among my school mates and stuck to this band, when others went on for others. Nevertheless, I was fairly convinced I would never ever in my lifetime see any AC/DC live show, because of the Iron Curtain.
In 1991 I was about to finish my study. That was why I had no money to travel for AC/DC and even had no time to do so. On August 26th, 1991 I had my last examination at the university and the next day I headed home for my parent's place, knowing there was already an AC/DC show in Berlin. But timewise I had not chance to join this. And then I learnt from the TV news that there was another show the following day for which tickets were still available. This was when my plan was fixed.
Already around noon I was at Waldbühne and I very shy asked for a ticket. I was slightly scared as it was my first big concert after the Wall had come down. Therefore I did not head for the pit in front of the stage and took a seat on one of the benches closest to it, instead. I listened to Queensryche and Metallica without having any beer - I wanted to see my stars stone cold sober.
When AC/DC jumped onto the stage for Thunderstruck I started crying - a dream came true! Everybody not being in the pit climbed the benches and we jumped on them. I sang with the boys as loud as I could, not knowing what I sang and whether it was any English, at all. I felt like the luckiest human being on this planet, continuously wiping my crying eyes. Angus's striptease during Jailbreak made one of my favorite songs to be the longest lasting of the show. And at the chorus of Highway To Hell I realized that the crowd behind me was as loud as the music coming from the stage - I felt somehow like being "inside the music".
The way back home I can't remember, maybe I flew mind wise or something, being convinced I saw the world's best live rock 'n' roll band ever. And until today my biggest treasures in my AC/DC collection are the ticket of this show and a worn AC/DC dollar from Moneytalks which I grabbed from the pit's floor after the show.
